Born in Kolkata, he belongs to a family of instrumentalists of distinction. His grandfather, Shri Bimal Chandra Das was a renowned esraj player while his father Sri Sailen Das and uncle Sri Shantanu Das were sitariyas of repute. He has had the privilege of studying under some great exponents and teachers of music including sitar exponents Prof. Sanjoy Bandopadhyay and Pandit Ajoy Sinha Roy and vocalists Pandit Manas Chakraborty and Shri Ramkrishna Basu.
